Description: Under a tree, a brick maker forces the kneaded clay into a wooden mold. A helper kneads clay (left) and a barefooted young man picks up lumps of raw clay from the ground (right). The scene is set next to a busy river. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Exodus 1:13-14. Motto: Divine service liberates us / From Satan’s slavery. Poem: As the Israelite of old / Made brick in servitude, /So man is also born servile: /And toils in the clay of this time: /But everyone who so desires will be /Offered God’s mercy and freedom.
