Scripture Reference:

Description: The mirror maker holds a mirror in an elaborate frame; behind him sits his apprentice. Mirror frames with and without glass hang on the wall. A city scene with a canal is visible through the open door. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Romans 1:20. Motto: Resemblance depends / On the being, that gave it. Poem: In the mirror of this time/The image of eternity shows itself; /This is a shadow of the essence: /What each then sees with his eyes, /Since a shadow is of no use: /He who seeks the origin, will gather fruit. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
