Scripture Reference:

Description: Sitting at his desk, the schoolmaster holds a penknife in his left hand to point out a passage on a slate to the pupil standing next to him. With his right hand, he points to an object in the distance. Next to his desk stands a large pole and a switch lies on his desk. A second student is waiting his turn. A number of students sit at a table next to the open window. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Job 28:28. Motto: Make medicine /Not venom. Poem: Through literacy, so highly acclaimed, / We are given much benefit and salvation, / As it shows us the path to heaven: /But, in order to separate the scum from the gold, /The misuse of this art should be avoided, /So that wisdom will crown us. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
