Author: Luiken, Jan, 1649-1712
Image Title: The Boom and Mast Maker: When flood forces you down, Defend yourself
Scripture Reference:
Description: In a shipyard, a pole-maker trims a large pole with a two-handled draw knife against the background of a number of ships’ sails and masts. Behind him, a man carries a pair of wooden oars over his shoulder. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Ezekiel 27:3-8. Motto: When flood forces you down, / Defend yourself. Poem: The man who labors with booms, / Makes surely many trips to the west, / And attempts that way to get to the east: /So does a soul, which aspires to the best; /It turns from wealth and pleasure, /To touch so the source of wealth.
