Scripture Reference:

Description: The lantern maker sits on a stool in front of the open window while hammering an object. On the floor are two finished lanterns; oil lamps, lanterns, and various tin objects are on display. An assistant carries a bundle of lantern poles into the workshop and a woman with a shopping basket looks into the window. Outside is a canal with a swan and her cygnet. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 27:1. Motto: Dost thou not want to go astray, / Follow Jesus’ rays. Poem: The word of the Lord lights our way, /As a lantern before the feet, / In the world’s night, on the dark road, /Where life is likely to meet with danger; / One should keep close to that leading star, /Until it brings us into the eternal light. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
