Image Title: The Balance Maker: Keep honest weight For close scrutiny
Scripture Reference:
Description: The balance maker sits at his workbench talking with a customer who inspects a small balance scale. From the ceilings hang a number metal balances and balance pans; a huge balance hangs between them; various weights are on the workbench. Outside two women walk with shopping baskets. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Leviticus 19:36. Motto: Keep honest weight / For close scrutiny. Poem: oh Balance of our Heart, /How necessary it is that we weigh / A temporary against an eternal good, /On which the most depends for us. / Should the eternal portion not sink down, / Then the scale is untrue and evil.
