Description: In his shop, the pewterer stands behind the counter holding a large platter; behind him are shelves loaded with pewter household objects. An assistant carries a tall stack of pewter plates toward the open doorway. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is 2 Timothy 2:20-21. Motto: Seek the treasure in yourself, / From the very finest vessel. Poem: The earthly mountain of flesh and blood, /Has a beautiful luster in its heart/If only man would mine for that; /Even as he is otherwise inclined,/And find glittering metals,/Which out of the night show up in the light.
