Author: Luiken, Jan, 1649-1712
Image Title: The Silk Winder: Seek and wear What pleases God
Scripture Reference:
Description: In a large workshop, the silk winder carefully inspects one of the hanks of silk that lie around him. In the background, several women wind silk thread onto large reels. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Ezekiel 27:16. Motto: Seek and wear / What pleases God. Poem: Even if the outer garment were of satin, /And the under garment made of old rags, / It would be despicable for anyone: /Who doesn’t step onto the path of virtue, / Even if the body glittered with jewels, /The soul is in fact tattered. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
