Description: This etched print features a member of the cloistered nuns of the Third Order of Saint Francis praying before an altar adorned with a crucifix. The life of these women is described as a life of penance in the world, which expressed itself in participation in the sacramental life of the Church, love of neighbor, humility, almsgiving, simplicity, and prayer. The text of Francis of Assisi’s Letter to the Faithful served as the rule of life for these women through much of the century. Unlike other Franciscan seculars, the Regulars choose to live their penitential life in community. In 1521 Pope Leo X (1475 – 1521 CE) promulgated a rule for all the male and female communities, adding a new element—the profession of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
