Image Title: Nuns of the Order of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady
Description: This etched print is a rendering of the apparition of Mary given to the Roman Catholic saint Beatrice of Silva (1424 – 1492 CE), in which she was instructed to found a new Order in Mary’s honor, what came to be known as the Order of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady. After several decades, Beatrice and some companions took possession of a monastery in Toledo set apart for them by Queen Isabella I (1451 – 1504 CE) for the new community. In 1489, by permission of Pope Innocent VIII (1432 – 1492 CE), the nuns adopted the Cistercian Rule, bound themselves to the daily recitation of the Office of the Immaculate Conception, and were placed under obedience to the Ordinary of the archdiocese.
