Image Title: Discalced Carmelite Nuns

Description: This etched print features the monastic reformer, mystic, and Roman Catholic saint Teresa of Avila (1515 – 1582 CE). Having led a lax lifestyle in a Carmelite monastery, she was finally converted to a life of perfection while praying before a statue of Christ scourged at the pillar. Her mystic life began soon afterwards with divine locutions, her first ecstasy, and an intellectual vision of Jesus. From that time forward, she made it her mission to found communities of discalced nuns devoted to the “Primitive Carmelite” Rule. Her enduring reforming work and epoch-making spiritual writings proved to be of special importance for posterity.
