Image Title: Reformed Abbesses of Fontevraud
Description: This etched print features a portrait of Maria of Brittany, the abbess of Fontevraud who in 1458 CE called on the pope for visitors to help reform the abbey and repair the devastation of the Hundred Years’ War. After investigation, they presented her with a new rule 1462, claiming to follow the spirit of Robert rather than his words. Finding this new rule too lax, she retired to the priory of the Magdalene at Orsan, where she established her own rule drawn from several traditional sources, including Robert’s original, emphasizing restoration of cloister, poverty, and observance of the Benedictine rule. It was approved by the pope in 1476 and spread to two other priories.
