Image Title: Nuns of the Rule of Saint Isidore of Seville

Description: This etched print features Florentina (d. c. 612), sister of Isidore of Seville (c. 560 – 626 CE) and Leander (c. 534 – 600/1), both of whom served as the Bishop of Seville. Before his elevation to the episcopate, Leander had been a monk, and it was through his influence that Florentina embraced the ascetic life. She associated herself with a number of virgins of similar interest and formed a religious community. Later sources declare their residence to have been the convent of Santa Maria de Valle near Ecija. When Isidore succeeded Leander in the episcopate, he greatly concerned himself with monastic discipline. Florentina gave Leander guidance in constructing a nun’s rule of life for the bourgeoning community. In it the author lays down the rules according to which cloistered virgins consecrated to God should regulate their lives.
