Image Title: Augustinian Hermitesses
Description: This etched print features a hermitess of the Order of Saint Augustine. In 1244 Pope Innocent IV (1195 – 1254 CE) directed the Tuscan hermits to accept the contemporary instantiation of the Rule of Saint Augustine, which had already been adopted by the Zanbonini in 1225 and the Bretteni in 1228. In 1256 Pope Alexander IV (d. 1261) united these three congregations to form the Friars Hermit. The hermits had settled in remote places. While the friars did not abandon these settlements, they soon tended to concentrate their work in towns, and became widely established in Western Europe. The later Middle Ages saw the rise of certain local congregations, but the Friars suffered considerably from the effects of the Reformation.
