Image Title: Sisters of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy (Mercedarians)
Description: In this etched print, a member of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy holds a text in her left hand, presumably the Bible. The Order was founded in the 13th century by Peter Nolasco (1189 – 1256 CE) to assist in the ransoming of Christians captured by the Moors. Its first base was in Barcelona, but it spread fairly rapidly throughout most of the Iberian peninsula and then into Italy. In addition to its work of fundraising for the ransom of captives, its members also traveled into Muslim lands and actively negotiated Christians’ release. Two widows of Barcelona, Isabel Berti and Eulalie Peins, were the foundresses of the order’s first community of female tertiaries.
