Image Title: Cloistered Nuns of the Third Rule of Saint Dominic

Description: This etched print features Catherine of Siena (1347 – 1380 CE), a monastic and spiritual reformer, the patron saint of Italy, the first woman Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church, and a renowned mystic. In this scene, Catherine kneels at the feet of a glorified Jesus, from whom she receives a crown of thorns, a symbol of her earthly vocation and one of her many attributes. Clutched to her breast is a crucifix, another of her attributes. Above, two cherubim hold a crown of glory, the heavenly reflection of Catherine’s crown of thorns. From the age of sixteen until her death, she was a member of the Dominican Order of Penance (later known as the Dominican Third Order) and founded a women’s monastery of strict observance outside the walls of Siena in the old fortress of Belcaro.
