Description: This etched print features a member of the Dominican nuns of the First Order. Founded by the monastic innovator Dominic (1170 – 1221 CE), the Dominican order took definite shape at the General Chapter at Bologna in 1220. At his behest, the order adopted not only individual, but corporate poverty, owning nothing but its actual houses and churches; communities, as well as individual friars, were to be supported only by alms, not by properties or revenues. The order spread rapidly throughout Europe and into Asia. Traditionally, the First Order of the Dominicans is considered to be comprised entirely of Dominican priests and brothers, but the author includes nuns among their ranks.
