Image Title: Premonstratensian Canonesses
Description: This etched print features a member of the Premonstratensian Canonesses Regular reading what appears to be devotional literature or Scripture. Otherwise known as the Norbertines, the Premonstratensian Canons were founded by the Roman Catholic saint Norbert (c. 1080 – 1134 CE) at Prémontré, near Laon, in 1120 CE. The basis of the rule was the so-called Rule of Saint Augustine, but with additional austerities. In its details, the Premonstratensian life also came under Cistercian influences through Norbert’s friendship with Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 1153 CE). In 1126 the Order received Papal approbation and quickly spread over Western Europe.
