Image Title: Oblates Regular of Saint Benedict
Description: This etched print features Frances of Rome (1384 – 1440 CE), a Roman Catholic saint, shielded from a devil by an angel holding a crucifix. In 1425 CE she founded the Oblates Regular of Saint Benedict, an association of noble Roman ladies, affiliated to the White Benedictines (“Olivetans”) of Santa Maria Nuova. In 1433, with the approval of Eugenius IV, Frances formed them into the Oblate Congregation of Tor de’ Specchi, at the foot of the Capitol, Rome. Following her adaptation of the Benedictine Rule, they give themselves to prayer and good works, but without vows, strict enclosure, or giving up their property, and they make revocable promises of obedience to the Mother President.
