Description: These were the women religious of Feuillants, the reformed Cistercians of Le Feuillant in the neighborhood of Toulouse, founded in 1577 by Abbot Jean de la Barriere (1544-1600 CE). After expelling from his house, which had grown lax and corrupt, the monks who would not accept his reform, the Abbot established a new rule stricter than the original. Pope Gregory XIII (1502 – 1585 CE) approved his action in 1581 and in 1589 Pope Sixtus V (1521 – 1590 CE) established the independence of the order. In 1588 the order of the Feuillantines, the female counterpart to the Feuillants, was formally established.
