Image Title: Nuns Observant of the Episcopal Rule
Description: This etched print features a member of the Nuns Observant of the Episcopal Rule. Eligius (c. 588-660 CE), a Gallo-Roman Christian saint and the Bishop of Noyon, took a great interest in the monastic life and founded a convent in Paris, one among several that he established in his diocese. For this community, he brought together three hundred women, some of whom were slaves, others of noble origin, and placed them under the guidance of one abbess Aurea. In 1107 the Bishop of Paris shut it down after charges of widespread sexual misconduct among its members persisted for such an extent of time that the charges could no longer be ignored.
