Image Title: Ambrosian Sisters
Description: This etched print features a member of the Ambrosian sisters. Despite the order’s name, Bishop Ambrose of Milan (337 – 397 CE) was not its founder, although he took a deep interest in the monastic life, and closely watched its beginnings in his diocese. He himself made provision for the wants of the monks who lived in a monastery outside the walls of the episcopal city under the guidance of Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430 CE), who was one of his priests at the time. Tradition holds that the increase in the ranks of the Milanese virgins brought about by Ambrose’ exhortations, coupled with the increase in piety among the widows, eventually overcame the rampant licentiousness of the women of that city .
