Image Title: Nuns of Saint Gregory
Description: This etched print features Trasilla, the aunt to Pope Gregory I (c. 540 – 604 CE), a virgin saint of the 6th century and member of the many female monastic communities that sprang up in and around Rome during her nephew’s pontificate. According to the legend of her death, Pope Felix III (d. 492 CE), her relative, appeared to Trasilla and asked her to enter Heaven through death; and on the eve of Christmas Trasilla died, seeing Jesus beckoning.
