Description: This etched print features one of the Carthusian nuns kneeling in her cell and reading from a book, perhaps the Liturgy of the Hours. The Carthusian Order is a Roman Catholic religious order of enclosed monastics founded by Bruno of Cologne (1030 – 1101 CE) in 1084 and includes both monks and nuns. The order has its own Rule, called the Statutes, rather than the Rule of Saint Benedict, and combines eremitical and coenobitic life.
