Image Title: Benedictine Nuns of Cluny
Description: This etched print features a female member of the Cluniac Benedictine monastic order praying at an altar adorned with a frieze of a crucifix. Under the leadership of Odo (c. 878 – 942) and his successors, the Cluniac reform of Western monasticism spread rapidly from Cluny, near Mâcon in Burghundy, to many influential religious institutions of Western Europe. It sought a renewed emphasis on personal spiritual life, choir life, and the splendor and solemnity of worship generally. It also emphasized sound economic organization, independence of lay control, and a reduction in manual labor.
