Image Title: Ethiopian-Coptic Antonine Sisters

Description: This etched print features a member of the Ethiopian-Coptic Antonine Sisters. Contrary to the understanding of this volume’s author, there has never been an historical congregation of Antonines among Ethiopians belonging to the Monophysite or Catholic traditions, only a fictional “Order of St. Anthony” tied to the hospice San Stefano dei Mori in Vatican City. Pope Sixtus IV designated this hospice for the use of Ethiopian pilgrim monks in the 15th century. The hospice’s “rule” dates only to 1551 and is nothing more than a set of regulations for the institution’s regulation .
