Image Title: Jerusalem Nuns of Saint Hilarion
Description: This etched print features a member of the “Jerusalem Nuns of Saint Hilarion,” though there is no such order in the historical record. Hilarion (c. 291 – 371 CE) was a native of Palestine and returned there as a hermit after his stay in the Egyptian desert among the followers of Anthony the Great. Upon his return, he garnered such a following that he is considered the founder of the anchoritic life in Palestine, but the organization of the earliest anchorite institutions there is unknown.
