Image Title: Nuns of the Acoemeter Studites
Description: This etched print depicts a nun of the first religious to take up residence at the monastery of Stoudios, whose members were known as “Studites.” These earliest Studites originally hailed from the Acoemetae, and their rule of life, which organized their psalmody so as to ensure its perpetual recitation by part of the community, greatly informed the early life of the Studites. Like the Acoemetae, the Studites sided against the Monophysites during the Acacian schism, which lasted thirty-five years, from 484-519 CE .
