Image Title: Beguine Serving an Infirm Woman

Description: A Beguine of Antwerp attempts to serve an infirm woman food and drink in the latter’s home. The Beguines, as a lay religious order, were active in Northern Europe, particularly in the Low Countries in the 13th-16th centuries. Its members lived in semi-monastic communities but did not take formal religious vows, and care for the sick was an integral component of this order’s vocation.
