Image Title: Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary (Visitandines)
Description: This etched print features a member of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, otherwise known as Visitandines, the order of contemplatives founded in 1610 by Francis de Sales (1567 – 1622 CE) and Jane Frances de Chantal (1572 – 1641 CE). It was designed to include women unable to bear the austerities of the older orders and devoted itself to the special cultivation of humility, gentleness, and sisterly love. Originally the Vistandines were a congregation with simple vows. The “constitutions” drawn up by Francis were an adaptation of the Augustinian Rule with the characteristic substitution of the Little Office of Our Lady of the Canonical Hours. The most notable saint of the order of Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647 – 1690 CE), whose visions had a large share in the institution of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.
