Image Title: Conventual Reforms of Charles Borromeo

Description: This etched print features a religious of a Milanese woman congregation. During his tenure as Archbishop of Milan, Charles Borromeo (1538-84) undertook a radical reformation of the see, which was the largest in Italy at the time, tightening up the morals and manners of the clergy and religious. He reestablished the strict observance of rule in the convents, going so far as to order the erection of grilles in the convent parlors.
