Image Title: Martyrdom of Flavia Domitilla
Description: This etched print depicts the Roman matron, Christian saint, and martyr Flavia Domitilla, daughter of the Emperor Vespasian (r. 69-79 CE) and married to Titus Flavius Clemens, Domitian’s cousin. Domitian banished her to the island of Pandateria when he put Clemens to death in 95 CE. According to the Roman historian Dio Cassius, both were accused of “atheism”, a charge which has sometimes been thought to imply either Judaism or Christianity, though this is open to serious doubt .
