Saint Gudwal

Book Title: Trophaeum vitae solitariae

Author: Leu, Thomas de, 1560-1612

Image Title: Saint Gudwal

Description: Saint Gudwal, hermit of Devon, prays in a cell he created out of a smuggler’s cave on the coast. In the background, the sea has destroyed Gudwall’s home and he must seek higher ground. According to legend, Gudwall prayed for his cave to be protected and God sent the fish of the sea to build a breakwater, one grain of sand at a time. The engraver of this image was Thomas de Leu, who copied (but reversed) the earlier designs of Maarten De Vos, whose work may be found in the Digital Image Archive under the call number 1587SADE.
