Description: In an open area, the Soul clings to Jesus. The Soul is portrayed as a young woman in a long dress and Jesus wears an aureole. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and composing the poem that accompanies it.
Poem: The Soul clinging tightly to Jesus.
Oh no! I do not leave thee, oh No!
Thou neither canst, nor wilt escape me;
I stay with God, my only ONE,
It goes as it will; and if it occurs,
That the earth and the kingdom of heaven should perish,
It does not touch me, that may happen,
For one I abandon all things,
Who would then tear my WILL loose?
My God, my Love, my only good,
Even if my body and soul decayed,
So long as there was still found in my bosom,
A breath, a little spark,
So long thou art loved by me;
With sweetness hast thou captured me,
As one entices a playing child,
Now I desire to cling to thee.
Thou art my foundation, where would I go?
Thou art my God, I hold thee in silence,
My OWN WILL seizes nothing,
Thou mayst form it according to thy Will.
God’s Answer:
In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment: but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. (Isaiah 54:8).
