Description: Jesus, wearing and aureole, and the Soul, portrayed as a young woman, view a broad landscape with many of the devil’s tricks and snares. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and composing the poem that accompanies it.
Poem: The Soul speaks about the many snares and traps of the Devil.
I saw the world large and wide,
Covered with a thousand tricks,
That would rightly frighten a heart,
Countless were all the snares;
The stretched net stood everywhere,
The Sting for feet lay in the valley,
And very hidden along the paths;
A device risen from the abyss,
Had very deceitfully here and there,
Many crafty bridges, full of danger,
Built with art, oh art of hell!
So clever to put evil to work!
I sighed and spoke: oh Father! oh!
My God, my most beautiful Love, who may,
Who may escape that many dangers,
Those tricks and that crafty net?
Then it was clearly said,
Only true Humility.
God’s Answer:
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
