Description: The Devil, portrayed as a blacksmith, holds a piece of iron in the fire. The Soul, portrayed as a young woman, looks on. Above the forge is an image of the dead Soul in hell, watched over by the Devil. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and composing the poem that accompanies it.
Poem: The Soul speaks about the state of the wicked.
But alas! how different this is!
The wicked gives his will
Into the hands of the smith of hell,
He keeps that evil master quiet,
Who puts his Soul into the burning fire,
From wickedness, lies, anger and wrath,
And everything more of that nature,
That is born from the realm of the abyss.
Those vanities with each other,
Knotted together and firmly bound
Those become manifest in him,
Now is his Soul a house of sins;
As they penetrate the entire mind,
With their natural forces,
Like the fire does with iron.
Oh Man! too grand to take heed;
How thou thyself dost walk in thy grief,
In eternal despair and misery,
That, the good Father does not want,
He did not create thee for such an end.
God’s Answer:
"Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him" (Isaiah 3:11).
