Scripture Reference:

Description: At the edge of the wharf, a sailor with a furry hat speaks to a man on an approaching lighter; a man next to him is bent over a large bundle. In the harbor are a second lighter and several sailboats. On the left is a quay with a row of houses. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 107:23-32.

Motto:
He who wishes to reach the East,
Must retreat from the West.

Poem:
O Sailor, who plows through the wild waves,
So far, in good hope,
He who travels to the holy land,
Must also navigate a wild sea;
But if he stays on course, there is no event,
That will prevent him from a good journey.
