Scripture Reference:

Description: Under a tree, the farmer, surrounded by cattle, chickens and a duck, carries a milk bucket. A farm, two pigs feeding from a trough and a woman cleaning butter churns are in the left background; in the distance, a man plows a field. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 65:9-13 though Luiken quotes Psalm 65:10-14.

Motto:
First sowed,
Then reaped.

Poem:
Through farming, with the Lord’s blessing,
Is much benefit obtained for man:
But he who desires a rich harvest,
Should put up with a little toiling,
On the field of hope and faith;
His fruit will never be consumed.
