Book Title: Spiegel van het menselyk bedryf : vertoonende honderd verscheiden ambachten, konstig afgebeeld en met godlyke spreuken en stichtelyke verzen verryke / door Jan en Kasper Luiken

Author: Luiken, Jan, 1649-1712

Image Title: The Chemist

Scripture Reference:

Description: In his laboratory, an elderly chemist, wearing a house robe and holding a pair of tongs in one hand, sits in front of two stoves while watching a number of retorts. A basket on the floor next to him is filled with wood or peat for the stove; bottles of liquids and chemicals line the shelves. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Romans 6:6-7.

Motto:
He who releases thee,
Is thy friend.

Poem:
The coarse being when tested,
Gives its spirit, or the very best,
So Wisdom searches through suffering,
For love’s attribute and wish,
The spiritual being from man,
To separate it from the coarse part.
