Image Title: The Mirror Maker

Scripture Reference:

Description: The mirror maker holds a mirror in an elaborate frame; behind him sits his apprentice. Mirror frames with and without glass hang on the wall. A city scene with a canal is visible through the open door. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Romans 1:20.

Motto:
Resemblance depends
On the being that produced it.

Poem:
In the mirror of this time
Is shown the image of eternity;
This is a shadow of the being:
That each then sees with his eyes,
For in a shadow one has nothing:
He who seeks the origin, will reap fruit.
