Image Title: The Lantern Maker

Scripture Reference:

Description: The lantern maker sits on a stool in front of the open window while hammering an object. On the floor are two finished lanterns; oil lamps, lanterns, and various tin objects are on display. An assistant carries a bundle of lantern poles into the workshop and a woman with a shopping basket looks into the window. Outside is a canal with a swan and her cygnet. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 27:1.

Motto:
Dost thou not wish to go astray,
Follow Jesus’ rays.

Poem:
The word of the Lord lights our way,
As a lantern before our feet,
In the world’s night, on the dark path,
Where life is likely to encounter danger;
One should keep close to that leading star,
Until it brings us into the eternal light.
