Description: Standing at his work-bench, the brass smith files the edges of the arms for a chandelier. A second man works in the background. On the ceiling hangs a chandelier and on the floor are several objects waiting to be finished. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Luke 12:19-21.
Motto: Not all shine is real.
Poem:
Though the yellow gleam looks like gold,
It must fail the test:
Although the worldly welfare shines grandly,
And is possessed like true fortune;
It is not gold, yet called so,
But copper, in the test of death.
