Author: Luiken, Jan, 1649-1712

Image Title: The Nap Shearer

Scripture Reference:

Description: The nap shearer shears a bolt of woolen fabric. Bolts of fabric are carried into the workshop to be hung and treated with teasing combs. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Genesis 3:21.

Motto:
He is wise, who prepares the garment
That never wears out.

Poem:
Man, who spends time and diligence,
Makes his garment of animal hair:
Thus he can prepare it all for the flesh;
Were it not then too poorly done,
So that the poor soul, in passing over,
Must depart from here, utterly naked and bare!
