Description: A glazier is in the process of putting a new pane in a window from the outside. Behind him, an apprentice searches through a box with glass panes of various sizes. The background consists of a city scene, with a woman drawing water from a well. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 97:11.

Life craves,
Light and air.
Poem:
In order not to shut the light outside the house,
Is the fine use of glass windows,
But people build the heart’s house shut,
Through vanity and trifles,
With wood and stone of earthly things,
And close it off from Heavenly light.
