Image Title: Martyrdom of Anthonis Ysbaarts
Description: Shortly after his conversion to Anabaptism, Anthonis Ysbaarts flees Thielt for Friesland to escape persecution, but he soon returns to supervise the affairs of some Mennonites who, like him, fled Thielt and sought refuge in Friesland. However, as he is about to return to Friesland, the bailiff arrests him and brings him before the town’s judges, who sentence him to be burned to death when he refuses to renounce his faith, but he convinces them to show some mercy and have him strangled first. Later, as he awaits his death on the stake, the executioner cuts off a piece of his torch to form a makeshift twisting stick with which to strangle him.
