Image Title: Torture of Algerius, Student at Padua
Description: The papal authorities have Algerius, a student at Padua, brought to Rome and sentenced to death for his confession of Anabaptist faith. At the stake on which Algerius is to be burned, a Carthusian monk offers him the crucifix and therewith an opportunity to confess his heresy. Algerius disregards this gesture, considering it idolatry, and his executioners pour boiling oil over his bare head and body as punishment. The ruins of the Roman Coliseum, a site of numerous Christian executions, loom in the background .
