In the left background is a building, with a garden and gateway in the front, where three youths are about to enter. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and for the brief poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture texts are Job 28:28; Pvb 9:10; 26:12; Isa 5:21 and Jas 3:13-18.

Motto:
He who can separate the Best from the many,
Has the Highest Share of Wisdom.

Poem:
The careful parent allows his child to Study,
So that he will acquire Mastery;
But if he doesn’t attend the Highest School,
Where Virtue is taught to his Soul,
So that he keeps God’s Laws,
Then with all his Wisdom he will go Astray.
