Image Title: The Hoop

Scripture Reference:

Description: A boy runs along a city canal, rolling his hoop with a stick. Behind him walks a family with a young child, who calls his mother’s attention to this scene. A pair of swans swims on the canal which is covered by a bridge. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and for the brief poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture texts are Job 5:17-21; Isa 26:16; Matt 11:28-30; and Jas 1:12; 5:7-8.

Motto:
Drive yourself always to do good,
So thou wilt reach virtue and joy.

Poem:
If the little Hoop were not driven,
Then its run would soon cease:
So human life must forward go;
From childhood into old age,
With fewer and with more strikes,
To arrive where it belongs.
