Description: A child blows her little flute so loud that one of three women nearby covers her ear with her hand. A man walks his dog in the background of this city scene. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and for the brief poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture references are to Proverbs 14:13 and Isaiah 5:7-14.
Motto:
Many mouths make such a sound,
As that of the ubiquitous Flute.
Poem:
The flute-playing by the child,
Only aggravates the Ear;
Like wild notes, without a tune:
So also the Old one’s vain joy,
Is only sorrow in the ear of Virtue,
The true Wise and grey Old one.
