Description: A mother kneels in the to place a helmet on her child, while another woman with arms outstretched in a protective gesture and an older child look on. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and for the brief poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture texts are Psalms 31: 23-24, 40:11, 141:3-4, 146:9; and Proverbs 2:6-8.


Motto:
Protect the tender bareness,
From painful fall or bump.

Poem:
Now the Child shall learn to walk alone,
And yet not hurt himself,
Thus his Mother has protected him:
Oh Lord! Do so protect our Heart
From the evil of sinful pain
And the harming of the tender Mind!
